How much more does bespoke cost?

Usually less than people expect. Every wall we make is cut to your measurements anyway, so bespoke is not a different process, it is a design that does not start from one of the six. The price lands wherever the amount of joinery puts it, which is often between two of the named walls.

What do you need from me to start?

A photo of the wall taken straight on, a rough width, and a note of anything in the way: a radiator, a doorway, a boiler, a bay. That is enough for us to say whether it can be done and roughly what it costs.

Can you work around a bay window?

Yes, and panelling that carries into a bay usually looks better than panelling that stops next to one. It is drawn first, because a bay has more angles in it than anything else in a normal room.

What about a sloping ceiling?

Loft rooms and dormers are some of the best media walls we build, because the joinery can pick up the slope and make it look deliberate. The panels are scribed to the actual angle, which is measured rather than assumed.

Can you match existing joinery in the room?

Usually. Bring us a photo of what is already there and we will tell you honestly whether we can match it or whether it will look like an approximation, which is worse than a deliberate contrast.

Bespoke media walls

The six walls in the range cover most rooms on the Wirral, and they are priced the way they are because they are designed once and built many times. Some rooms are not most rooms.

When bespoke is the answer

A bay that the wall has to carry into. A doorway too close to the chimney breast for a symmetrical design. A boiler or a meter that cannot move. A sloping ceiling in a loft room. An open plan space where the wall is seen from the kitchen as well as from the sofa, so it has more than one front. A room where the breast is so far off centre that a matching pair of alcoves would look like a mistake.

None of those are problems. They are the reason the wall will look like it belongs to the house rather than like it was ordered from a page.

The price follows the amount of joinery, and in practice a bespoke wall usually lands between two of the named ones. We will tell you which two at the point of the drawing.

How it works

Send a photo of the wall taken straight on, a rough width, and a note of anything in the way. That is enough for us to say whether what you want is possible and roughly what it costs, without anybody coming out.

If it is worth going further, we survey properly, check what is behind the plaster and draw the wall with the real numbers on it. Nothing is ordered and nothing is cut until you have seen that drawing and agreed the price. The price does not move afterwards.

What we will tell you not to do

A three sided fire set into a flat chimney breast costs more than an inset one and looks the same, so we will talk you out of it. Panelling that stops at an arbitrary point draws attention to where it stopped. A design stretched past the width it was drawn for stops working, which is why the Caldy has a limit rather than a suggestion. If what you are asking for is going to disappoint you, it is cheaper for both of us to say so before it is made.
